Drama Integration
At the Integrated Arts Academy at the H.O. Wheeler school in Burlington, Vermont, the resident Drama Coach works alongside classroom teachers to plan and teach integrated units of study. These 6 week units align with Common Core and National Arts Standards and are designed to build theater skills while connecting to classroom content. The students are pre-assessed in both disciplines at the beginning of the units and assessed again at the end to determine progress.
Drama integration engenders a sense of agency and efficacy in students as they construct and demonstrate understanding in collaborative, creative ways. Students develop language, grow in confidence, expand their expressive range, and build empathy. Drama allows students learn kinaesthetically with their whole bodies and harnesses their natural propensity for imaginative play.
